Agua de Dios, Colombia's historic leper colony, founded in the late 19th century, was a forced isolation colony for people with leprosy. It functioned almost like a concentration camp, with barbed wire and surveillance around the village. There, the sick lost their rights and were segregated from society. But it was not only those suffering from the disease who arrived: there were also political refugees, women victims of misogyny, and perhaps self-exiles seeking a haven of peace and genuine human contact.
